A memory of Sir Norman Foster's visit to the construction site of the Kuwait airport terminal and the handshake moment.
In November 2023, Sir Norman Foster and Lady Foster visited the construction site of Terminal 2 (KIAT-2) at Kuwait International Airport—delivered by Limak İnşaat to the Foster + Partners design. They met the delivery team and reviewed the progress on site, marking an important milestone for one of the region’s largest infrastructure projects.
• a closer look at the iconic roof structure and glazing works as the terminal takes shape,
• a coordination walkthrough with the contractor (Limak) and Kuwait’s Ministry of Public Works representatives.
T2 is a large-scale project with strong sustainability ambitions—and seeing it from the site perspective is a powerful reminder of how design becomes an operational reality. Foster + Partners is engaged on the client side as a consultant (acting in an employer’s representative / investor-supervision capacity), supporting delivery quality and design intent throughout construction.
For me, it was also a special moment—on KIAT-2 I worked with Foster + Partners as an Associate Senior Architect, leading packages across Wayfinding Signage and ICT. I had a major role in shaping the wayfinding concept, aligning passenger journeys with the terminal architecture and coordinating with stakeholders to carry the intent through to delivery. Meeting Sir Norman Foster on site and shaking his hand was a personal highlight.
Short visit to Kuwait.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and may all your plans for the coming year come true!
A typical day at the KIAT-2 (Kuwait International Airport Terminal No. 2) construction site in Kuwait!
I imagine that when Adrian Smith (SOM architect) visited Dubai, then a city of one million and now 3.5 million, at the beginning of the millennium to discuss the Burj Khalifa project, he must have been impressed by the old part of the city, especially the riverside development, which was somewhat reminiscent of the Grand Canal in Venice, with gondolas, houses reflected in the water and temple towers towering above. I can imagine that these views and the incredible pace of development might have made you think of the Venetian Republic at the end of the Middle Ages. And just as St Petersburg was called the Venice of the North, Dubai is now the Venice of the Middle East.
The newly built campus in Masdar City - Abu Dhabi. The campus includes the University of Artificial Intelligence and the Siemens Research Centre. A stunning design by F+P. It's a great honor to work for the company that designed such a masterpiece. Below is a photo report. Photos (Dec 2023).
